Look out for LT&C-Events or subscribe to our LT&C-Calendar. For example note down the dates for our 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM): May 26-31 in the Majella National Park, Abruzzo, Italy. The formal AGM will be on May 26, combined with a workshop on “Tourism, Wolf Management and National Parks”, followed by a 3-day excursion into the Majella National Park (May 27-29) plus an optional additional 2-day excursion into the National Park of Abruzzo (May 30/31).
LT&C organises only events and study tours, which are related to our mission: encouraging tourism to support national parks and other protected areas. However, we also want to minimise our climate footprints and to support other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We, therefore, like you to have another look at our last year’s information on how to compensate for your travel emissions.
LT&C supports proven high-quality emission reduction projects
We at LT&C take the integrity of our activities and our support for high-quality emission reduction projects very seriously and would like to get back to our community on issues brought to our attention.
Clarifying the concept of offsetting: All organisations and individuals have a carbon footprint that needs to be managed. As much as any technology, reducing emissions globally depends on people changing their behaviour – this means using energy and resources sparingly. Unavoidable emissions should then also be managed. “Carbon offsetting” or “carbon compensation” refers to the process in which an organisation or an individual invests in a sustainability project or initiative to mitigate a certain amount of carbon emissions that they themselves produce (for example, from the carbon dioxide produced from taking an international flight). This sustainability project can be located anywhere in the world and involves anything from planting trees to sequester carbon to replacing carbon-intensive fossil fuel power with renewable wind-powered energy. To provide offsets, the project’s activity results in the reduction of carbon emissions in a proven, verified way. We at LT&C have invested in a premium project (through purchasing carbon credits), and are facilitating verified practices that reduce carbon emissions in Zimbabwe, and that contribute to emission reductions on a global scale. For more information on carbon compensation, and how carbon credits work, we invite you to watch this video.
Ensuring the integrity of the carbon compensation projects we invest in: LT&C works with South Pole, an experienced project developer, and the project manager of the Kariba REDD+ project. South Pole only offers carbon credits from projects that are third-party verified and monitored against an existing, accredited standard. As a member of International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA), South Pole uses ICROA-approved standards. Carbon credits are assigned serial numbers and are issued, transferred and permanently retired in publicly accessible emission registries, such as Markit Environmental Registry and APX VCS Registry. Furthermore, for the Kariba REDD+, South Pole sources carbon credits directly from the project, which ensures that the maximum amount of our investments go directly into the Kariba REDD+ project activities. More information about the Kariba REDD+ project can be found in this brochure and in the Markit Registry here.
