Upcoming general elections in Iceland (October 29) have revealed a growing support for a highland national park among Icelandic political parties. The nation´s public TV station (RUV) recently broadcast a program/show where environmental issues where discussed. Candidates from all 10 political parties that run for the elections were invited. The show featured a short clip about the central highland and ideas of a highland national park. All candidates were then asked if their party supports the idea of a highland park. Out of the 10 parties, five unconditionally support the central highland being turned into a national park. Three parties welcome the idea and want to look further into it, and two parties did not answer the question directly but talked about the importance of public access and utilization in the highland.
