The November edition of the SEVENSEAS travel and marin conservation magazine came out just after the news about achieving the world’s largest marine protected area (MPA), the Ross Sea in Antarctica, had spread. The magazine, always coming out at the 1st of a month, just managed to publish this news also. And just perfectly fitting, they published in the same edition (pp. 92-99), why there is a need to complete the ring of MPAs in the Southern Seas all around Antarctica. They just took what LT&C-member and representative of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance, Ricardo Roura, had authored als LT&C-Initiative on our website: Supporting Marine Protected Areas in the Southern Oceans.
This is exactly what is needed now: to raise the global understanding for the need to complete a Circum-Antarctic MPA-Network. After some of us were able to celebrate the CCAMLR decision of creating the 1,55 million km2 Ross Sea MPA during an LT&C-study tour in Antarctic waters, LT&C members are committed to the larger goal. And everyone having had the privilege to visit Antarctica or is travelling there in the future should support the implementation of the overall plan to achieve a complete ring of marine protected areas around Antarctica. Tour operators bringing travellers to Antarctica as well as their umbrella organisation, IAATO, can play a major positive role in this respect. The fascinating Southern Oceans with its unique wildlife need to be protected for all times!
