Sven Åke Bjørke

Sven Åke Bjørke is Assistant Professor at the University in Agder. He is educated as a natural science teacher, lawyer, jurist-linguist and e-pedagogue. He has previously worked as a teacher at secondary schools in Norway. He has also worked for several years as information manager at UNEP/GRID-Arendal, where one task was to popularise the information from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and UNEP.

He was a lead author and editor of publications like:
Vital Climate Graphics  |  Vital climate graphics Africa  | State of environment Norway.

He has written or co-authored e-books like Together we can – Team and collaborative elarning onlineThe art of speaking to an audienceStudy strategies and study techniquesHow to write academic essays and The Greenhouse effect, Climate Change and the road to sustainability, in addition to several articles on online education. Awarded the TISIP prize for innovative E-pedagogy 2008

Sven Åke Bjørke has also worked as a consultant for the development of State of the Environment report for China and South Africa State of the Environment Report China 1997;  |  State of the Environment Report South Africa 1997 and for the Programme ‘Mainstreaming Education for Sustainable Development in Africa (MESA)

In the early 1980s he worked as a Field Director in Kenya for the Norwegian Save the Children. Prior to that hw was a headmaster at a Kenyan secondary school through the Norwegian volunteer service. He has also worked for the Norwegian NGO ARC-aid as a board member for 20 years, and for the Norwegian Refugee Council in Kosovo at the end of the war in 2000.

Would you like to join the Rockhoppers?

If so, please check that you fulfill the LT&C criteria:

 

  1. You are a university student, at least at bachelor level. Third year bachelor, second year masters
  2. You need to have  a very good knowledge of English. Ability to express yourself in academic English orally and in writing
  3. You need basic knowledge of research methods – both quantitative and qualitative
  4. You need basic knowledge and understanding of ecology
  5. You must have personal interest and engagement in environmental matters, conservation and eco-tourism
  6. You must be willing to work in the field for at least four weeks during thesis writing period, with only basic and simple accommodation provided
  7. You are willing to share results of your research with LT&C, and when appropriate also take part in publishing the findings in accordance with the aims of LT&C
  8. You must provide a consent from your faculty that they are willing to cooperate with LT&C
