A healthy ocean is part of the solution to repairing the climate and biodiversity crises. We need to take collective action to protect our blue planet.
This year’s World Ocean Day on 8 June focussed on supporting the global movement to commit to the 30×30 goal. World leaders are called on to protect 30% of the planet’s land, water, and ocean by 2030.
At LT&C, our global network has useful examples of how the 30×30 goal can be achieved through tourism partnerships.
LT&C-Examples include marine protected areas such as the Misool Private Marine Reserve in Indonesian which supports the area’s highest concentrations of reef fish biomass; the Area Marina Protetta di Torre Guaceto along Italy’s South-East coast with one of the richest examples of marine life in the Mediterranean; and the Ivory Coast’s Grand Béréby that includes globally significant nesting and foraging grounds for leatherback, green, and olive ridley turtles.
The work to support the 30×30 goal is part of the lead-up to the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP-15). Later this year, COP-15 will bring together governments to agree on goals to guide global actions through to 2030.
