The Michael Succow Foundation was founded in 1999 by Prof. Michael Succow after the Right Livelihood Award, also known as Alternative Nobel Prize, was awarded to him in 1997. The Succow Foundation is operational with activities both nationally and internationally, guided by the principles: „Preserve, sustain, value“. Initially engaged in the development and establishment of national parks, biosphere reserves and world heritage sites in post-Soviet countries, nowadays the Succow Foundation is involved in projects on four continents on climate protection, protected areas, sustainable land management and promotion of young scientists and conservationist around the globe. Thanks to the expertise of its employees and the foundation’s board, it is well-positioned in all landscapes – from peatlands to deserts. Since tourism and involvement of local communities is an incremental part of conservation nowadays, the Michael Succow Foundation develops and implements communication strategies, and up-to-date nature-based tourism offers in many of its international projects as well as on the foundation’s own natural heritage sites in North-eastern Germany.
