For the third time the Sustainable Destinations Top 100 competition is organised by Green Destinations in cooperation with 20 other international organisations for sustainable tourism. The aim of the competition is to highlight success stories in destination management, and to exchange good practices between destinations. Selection involves formal nomination by destination ambassadors and evaluation by a panel of ca. 100 international experts. Last year 5 of our LT&C-Example providers (see below) where awarded as Top 100 Sustainable Destinations. We therefore encourage all of our present LT&C-Example providers to download the call for nominations for the 2017 award and thereby make their Example even better known.
5 LT&C-Examples have been awarded as Sustainable Destinations Top 100 2016 when this award scheme was unveiled 27 September 2016 on World Tourism Day and Green Destinations Day. The awards celebrate the efforts of tourism destinations‘ responsible and sustainable tourism initiatives. The list is the result of open calls in newswires, social and business media. Destinations could be nominated by any interested party through a form that was available online.
Nominators had to provide extensive information on the destination and on its efforts to make itself and its stakeholders more sustainable for the benefit of visitors, its local communities and the world. Information had to be provided about the extent the destination complies with the 15 core criteria of the Green Destinations Standard (table). Over 150 nominations were received. All nominations were evaluated by experts of the Green Destinations Top 100 Team and by members of the special Top 100 Selection Panel, that included 60 tourism sustainability experts, among other Peter Prokosch from LT&C.
LT&C had encouraged its tour-operator members and authors of LT&C-Examples to apply for this award. The following applied and where successful:
Amahoro Tours/Red Rocks: Volcanoes National Park.
The International Wadden Sea: Norderney
The Award winners were presented to the 350 participants of the Global Green Destinations Gala, 27 September 2016 in the Castle of Ljubljana (Slovenia), European Green Capital 2016. See also press release and pictures of the event, provided by Green Destinations.
